These paintings are intellectualised in many ways, formal, deliberate and often thematic. They respond to a strong formal training but increasingly seem to have become primarily concerned with the expression of an emotional and sensuous response to place, and the evocation of a parallel response in the viewer. Everything is an object, but the object takes on meanings and associations of its own, as well as meanings in relationship to the artist.     Dickon Hall
